Researchers Develop Membrane-Based Approach for More Sustainable Oil Refining

A new study from the Lively Lab and collaborators at KAIST, published in Nature, demonstrates a membrane-based approach that could make crude oil refining substantially more sustainable. The research reveals that a commercially available polyacrylonitrile (PAN) membrane can selectively separate crude oil through a previously unrecognized self-forming filtration mechanism.

The membrane maintained stable performance over four weeks of continuous operation while achieving crude oil flow rates more than 23 times higher than those reported in the group's earlier work. Techno-economic analysis suggests that incorporating this membrane process before conventional distillation could reduce refinery energy use by 30%, carbon dioxide emissions by 35%, and water consumption by 20%.
